Presenter Details

Paul Watkins

Paul Watkins is the General Counsel, Australia, for Stewart Title Limited. In that role, Paul is responsible for commercial and residential policy development, risk management, regulatory compliance, claims and underwriting supervision and general corporate legal matters.

Paul is a solicitor and was admitted to practice in 2001. Prior to joining Stewart Title, Paul worked in private practice in the ACT and NSW in both small and medium sized law firms, where he gained considerable experience in residential and commercial conveyancing, commercial property development, leasing and general property practice. Paul joined Stewart Title in 2004 as Legal Counsel and was appointed General Counsel for the Australian Branch in 2007.

Paul has been a contributor to a number of Australia legal industry publications discussing the benefits of title insurance, including the New South Wales Law Society Journal and various AIC publications Australia wide. Paul has particular expertise in risk management and regularly presents to lawyers, conveyancers and lenders on a variety of risk management related issues, including title insurance, title claims and real estate fraud.

Paul also has a keen interest in native title law. In 2010 Paul took up a position as a Senior Legal Officer for a Native Title representative body in Queensland to assist in the management of a number of native title claims in the Federal Court, including the negotiation of various Indigenous Land Use Agreements on behalf of the Indigenous traditional owners. Paul resumed his role with Stewart Title in 2011.

In his spare time Paul loves to spend time with his family, play drums and has a fondness for restoring old Minis.

Paul holds degrees in Law (Hons) and Social Sciences from the University of Canberra and is admitted as a solicitor in New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and the High Court of Australia.
