Are you considering a career change or about to enter tertiary education? Would you like the challenge of a career in property law combined with the satisfaction of helping people achieve their dreams? Then consider a career in conveyancing.

Professional conveyancers may be self employed and running their own business; they may work in small firms; or they may be employed by large conveyancing or legal firms. Conveyancers must undertake regular professional education throughout their careers to maintain high levels of professionalism and keep up to date with complex legislative and regulatory changes. Frances Portelli, a conveyancer with many years experience, says "I love my work. I enjoy dealing with the public and assisting them through to a satisfactory settlement."

There is one institution in South Australia offering a tertiary course in conveyancing, the Panorama TAFE. No other courses are recognised for registration as a conveyancer in South Australia.

Students at the Pamorama TAFE can undertake an Advanced Diploma of Financial Services (Conveyancing). This course may be studied to Certificate IV in Conveyancing for enhancing your skills without achieving the Advanced Diploma. Certificate IV students are not eligible for registration as a conveyancer. Anyone undertaking tertiary studies in conveyancing is encouraged to apply for student membership of the AIC. Conveyancers are property law specialists; they are also "people" people who enjoy working closely with their clients, solving problems, protesting their interests, and striving to ensure a positive outcome.

"What I really enjoy about conveyancing is phoning the client following settlement to let them know they own a home or that they have money for their dreams" says AIC Member Penny Erskine.

The future is positive for a career as a conveyancer with exciting moves towards electronic conveyancing and the increasing recognition of conveyancers nationally.

AIC Member Frances Portelli says "There are really no boundaries for the enterprising young conveyancer, educated of course in South Australia, who may be ready to experience new challenges".
